    2018 - 07.03

NORTH-WEST Thunder coach Phil Thomas was quietly confident at the club’s season launch last night.

However, he wasn’t prepared to underestimate other teams either.

“We are really happy we have maintained the majority of the group from last year, which is important for stability,” Thomas said.

“We will certainly be competitive, but it’s hard to know the improvement and movement of other teams.

“It’s one of those unknowns until we start.”

The Thunder have two new US imports this year and Thomas said he was happy to have them in the state early last month in order for them to become familiar with the program.

“They have been with us for six weeks, it’s good to get them here early so they can adapt to the living style and different style of basketball,” Thomas said.

Fred Hunter comes highly recommended from Nicholls State University, is skillful and has already slotted nicely into the line-up.

Monzeigo Williams is from Mid Western University and will be used in the back court.

“We don’t have any injuries at the moment and we expect everyone to be fully fit by the first home game,” Thomas said.

The team will work hard to live up to the expectations of supporters after having a successful year last year, Thomas added.

“It’s not so simple to repeat a season, it’s a changing league,” he said.

“We are a proven unit now, we have shown we can entertain a crowd and we have a successful history.

“There are no guarantees, but there is no reason why people won’t want to support us after last year.”

The Thunder’s first home game will be held at the Ulverstone Schweppes Arena on April 11 from 7.30pm.
