A NEW lawn at Haymarket Reserve is tipped to increasecroquet’s popularity in Bathurst.

Bathurst City Croquet Club members on Wednesday christened the new turf, playing the first games as part of the all-day Social Croquet Competition.

Members andvisitors took to the grounds bright and early to play five games of croquet.

The lawn was bright and bristling following Tuesday’s welcome showers and was in perfect condition.

Club secretary John Cook said the members were so far enjoying the game on the new lawn and were looking forward to getting more use out of it.

“They are all very pleased that we have the lawn and we had great co-operation between the club members to get it down,” he said.

“They think it is really great to experience the lawn and they enjoy that the balls roll straight.”

Bathurst City Croquet Club chose to rip up the old surface, which was overrun by weeds and in desperate need of maintenance, as a project for the bicentenary year.

“It needed to be rejuvenated as [the grass] had been down since 1927,” Mr Cook said.

Three inches of dirt was removed from the playing surface before it was laser levelled and relayed with winter green couch by Windsor Turf.

While the lawn is open for use now, further mowing work needs to be carried out to ensure it reaches pristine condition.

“At the moment it is a heavy level five lawn and we need to get it down to a level one,” Mr Cook said.

The work cost the club $10,000 and was made possible thanks to years of dedicated fundraising and the generosity of members.

Now that the work is completed, the club is encouraging more people to join the fun of friendly and competitive croquet.

Anyone with an interest in playing the game is asked to stop by and be on the lookout for upcoming open days.
