Stacy Hardy, 72, yesterday got a dramatic new look (later dyed red) from hairdresser Casey Roe to raise money for Shave For A Cure. 150325LP01 Picture: LEANNE PICKETTTHERE are not many 72-year-olds who would be game to sport a bright red mohawk, but for Stacy Hardy it’s all for a good cause.

The Mercy Place resident went under the razor yesterday and had her hair styled and dyed into the punkish ‘do’ for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.

The attention-grabbing hairstyle is for a cause close to Ms Hardy’s heart.

“I’ve supported Shave for a Cure for quite a number of years and support all the cancer charities as well,” she said.

“I’ve known quite a lot of people who have died from leukaemia and other cancers and a lot of people who have been very ill.”

Ms Hardy has so far raised more than $150 for the cause.

“I’m thankful to Mercy Place for allowing me to do this here and for all those who supported me,” she said.

“This is a tangible way I’m showing my support to cancer patients now and maybe into the future.”

Mercy Place staff also got into the spirit, donning bright wigs and crazy hairstyles in support of Ms Hardy.

It’s the third time the avid fund-raiser has undergone a close shave for the cause.

Ms Hardy has coloured her hair the past two years but before that has had a full shave and one side of her head shaved.

“A lot of people say ‘I couldn’t see myself doing it’ and a lot of people say ‘ what does it mean?’. I just say in a few simple words what it’s about,” she said.

With the weather cooling down, Ms Hardy doesn’t regret her decision to lop off her locks for a third time.

“I don’t mind the colder weather. I have a beanie if it rains,” she said.

“It’s for a cause and it doesn’t take long to grow back.”
