  • In A Wink gets a nod: Filly a good bet for Wild Card

    2018 - 07.03

IN A Wink will be at her best when the Tamworth-owned and bred filly contests Sunday’s $50,000 Country Championship Wild Card at Muswellbrook’s Skellatar Park.

The Greg Bennett-trained filly, raced by Tamworth’s favourite “slumberman” Errol Leicht (proprietor of Forty Winks) had a gallop after races at Scone on Tuesday in preparation for Sunday’s 1280m Wild Card.

The daughter of Tamworth-based stallion, Ready As, finished third in the HNWRA Country Championship Qualifier at Tamworth to Voodoo Lad and Tarangower.

“She had a very tough run,” Tina Eveleigh said yesterday.

“It’s a tough ask to switch back to the 1280m for this race and then back up six days later over 1400m at Randwick, but she’s the type of filly I think will handle it.”

Eveleigh is in charge of the Greg Bennett stable for another week.

“Greg’s on holidays in the US,” she said.

“He has been away the last two weeks and has another week to go.” In his absence the stable has continued to excel.

“We’ve had four winners, two seconds, three thirds, a fifth and a tenth from 11 runners,” she said.

“Mercurian also had a very good win (at Scone Tuesday). We’ve been having a good run.”

She will be glad to hand over the reins to Bennett when he returns on April 2.

Hopefully that is a few days before In A Wink runs in the April 4 $300,000 Country Championship Final (1400) atRandwick.

However the three-year-old filly has to qualify first by running first or second in Sunday’s Wild Card.

At Tamworth she was wide all the way but finished about two lengths from Voodoo Lad and Tarangower, who will be two of the favourites for the April 4 final.

“She’s done well, very well since that run,” Eveleigh said.

“She had a sprint yesterday and was great.

“She bounced back really quickly from that. We haven’t had much to do with her switching back to the 1280m on Sunday.”
