MEMBERS of the public raised a number of concerns at Wednesday’s council meeting, with the gallery packed with onlookers.

During question time, residents asked the councilabout issuesas diverse as Councillor Mark Weragoda’s drink-driving conviction, the proposed Bendigo mosque and the council’s decision to close the Bendigo Early Learning Centre.

Resident Clare Dean asked Mayor Peter Cox whether council would pay for Cr Weragoda’s transport costs, including his taxi fares, considering he recently had his license suspended for 12 months fordrink driving.

Cr Cox said council would not pay for Cr Weragoda’s taxi fares.

He said the council was closing the Bendigo Early Learning Centre due to the increasing number of childcare centres in Bendigo and rejected one questioner’sassertionthat an increase in Muslim residents would lead to more crime and unemployment.
