Earth Hour will be held at 8.30pm on March 28.

Maitland City Council willsupport the event by turning off all non-essential lighting and electrical equipment at council-owned facilities.

Council is encouraging the Maitland community to get involved with the initiative.

Development and environment manager David Simm said anything the community could do to support Earth Hour would be worthwhile.

“The community of Maitland is challenged to look at their everyday activities to see what they can do to show their support for our environment,” he said.

“Businesses can turn off illuminated exterior signs, offer diners in restaurants meals by candlelight and turn off electrical appliances that don’t need to be left on when the business is closed, such as computer screens, photocopiers and printers.

“Although the initiative of Earth Hour is a single hour action, individuals should feel empowered by their support as we can all make a difference with lasting behavioural changes by taking the Earth Hour message beyond the single hour.”
